A vile animal abuser killed a hunter’s beloved pet dog by stabbing him through the eye with a screwdriver.

Lee Eastridge, 50, found his bluetick coonhound Smokey bathed in blood at his home in Glade Spring, Virginia last month.

The farm worker rushed his three year-old pet to a nearby veterinarian, who told him that the screwdriver had been plunged into Smokey’s right eye and pierced the roof of his mouth.

Eastridge was initially told that Smokey would survive his injuries, but the tortured pet suffered an unexpected hemorrhage and died the day after he was stabbed.

He told Metro US: ‘Losing Smokey really hurt my feelings.

‘I don’t know what kind of a person would do that to an animal.

‘Smokey never knew a stranger, and would have licked anyone to death if he was given the chance.

‘But whoever killed him would have had to have held him down to stick the screwdriver in, because I know Smokey wouldn’t have taken that kind of abuse lying down.’

Eastridge was out when Smokey was attacked, with a neighbor discovering his injured pet, and contacting him to say he needed to return home.

The grieving dog owner believes he knows who killed Smokey – a local man he was involved in a minor dispute with over that man’s dogs a month before Smokey’s death.

Eastridge said his neighbor witnessed that man pulling up by Smokey’s shed to kill him, and that he fled covered in blood after.

He passed the man’s details on to Washington County Sheriff’s Office, but is upset over claims that the suspect was freed without charge after questioning.

Eastridge said: ‘If I had been home when Smokey’s killer arrived I would have killed him myself.

A Washington County Sheriff’s Department spokesman told Metro US they had not been made aware of a potential eyewitness to the crime, but will now follow that lead up.

He added that several individuals have been questioned, and that the investigation is ongoing.
