A police officer who was filmed ramming a black man with his car before getting out and brutally beating him has been arrested for assault.
St Charles County Prosecutor Time Lohmar charged former Florissant, Missouri police officer Joshua Smith with first-degree assault, armed criminal action and fourth-degreee assault after he was caught on camera hitting the man with his police SUV on June 2.
‘The moment he turned his headlights towards the individual, it became a 4,000-pound missile,’ Lomar said during a press conference Wednesday.
Florissant Police Chief Timothy Fagan said the incident occurred after Smith and his colleagues observed ‘suspicious behavior’ by the occupants of a black Dodge Charger, which matched a description of a vehicle sought by police for its involvment in a shooting the previous night.
Chief Fagan has since fired Smith, who turned himself into police one day after a new video of the incident surfaced that shows him clearly hopping out of the SUV before beating the victim, as he screams and says he is not armed.

‘The video is sufficient evidence to immediately charge Joshua Smith,’ the victim’s lawyers, Jermain Wooten and Jerryl Christmas, said in a statement.
‘After the victim is struck and seriously injured, Detective Joshua Smith kicks and beat him while the victim is screaming in pain and fear, begging for someone to help him.’

In addition to Smith’s termination, two other detectives who were his passengers have been placed on leave.
‘Video has made the difference not only in St Louis but across the entire country. But for the video, we wouldn’t be at the point we’re at now and the sad thing is that video is the top of the iceberg,’ Christmas said.
