Kim Huybrechts has apologised to Luke Humphries for his comments in the wake of his PDC World Darts Championship defeat after saying he had embarrassed himself by losing to the 24-year-old.

Humphries comfortably beat the Belgian 4-1 in the last 16 at the Alexandra Palace, setting up a cracking quarter-final with Peter Wright on Sunday.

The Hurricane was well below his best, averaging just 89.11 in defeat and was fuming with his own performance against Cool Hand Luke.

After the disappointing loss, Huybrechts responded by castigating himself for losing to someone like Humphries, who he believes he is much, much better than.

‘I’m a thousand times better than Luke Humphries. I have not showed that and I cannot lose matches like this anymore,’ said Huybrechts after the defeat.

‘You have the easiest draw of the entire World Championship and you do nothing with it. That gives a frustrating feeling.

‘If you have this player in the last 16. Luke is not a top player, then you need to beat him. If you don’t do that, you are not a top player yourself.

‘When you play your normal level, then you win the match. Now I embarrass myself.’

However, the former Premier League player has since apologised for his comments, saying he used the wrong words in frustration.

Huybrechts tweeted: ‘Would like to apologise to Luke and his family for my words. It’s no excuse but I was very frustrated after my match playing so poorly!

‘I used a lot off wrong words in my interview and feel bad for it! Luke is a top player and a world champion and I need to respect that!

Humphries is yet to respond to the apology and while it will almost certainly be seen as water under the bridge, he was not impressed with the original comments.

The world youth champion tweeted: ‘Very disrespectful comment from Kim. I thought better of him to say something like that. If he thinks he’s a thousand times better than me he should of shown it today…. But he didn’t.’

Huybrechts was left frustrated with his own decision-making during the loss to Humphries, turning down a shot at the bullseye in the deciding leg of the third set before Cool Hand stepped in to take out 146.

The Englishman had little sympathy for the ‘silly’ decision, reminiscent of the classic 1983 World Championship final when Keith Deller pounced on a similar move from Eric Bristow.

‘The thing for me was the 146, it was a game changer and Kim will be kicking himself for declining the bull,’ Humphries told LiveDarts. ‘If he wouldn’t have declined it he could have been sitting here so he shouldn’t ever have done it.

‘To turn down a simple finish like 81 is silly. Eric Bristow did it and lost a world title to Keith Deller.’

Cool Hand Luke now takes on Snakebite in the second quarter-final on Sunday in the afternoon session.
