Top Gear Christmas Special: Paddy McGuinness narrowly misses death in on-screen accident

The trip took a dangerous turn (Picture: BBC)
The Top Gear Christmas Special saw hosts Paddy McGuinness, Freddie Flintoff, and Chris Harris face almost certain death tonight as they travelled across Nepal.

The trio were dispatched to drive the distance between capital city Kathmandu and the Forbidden City of Lo Manthang with a twist – using city cars usually used for an hour or less commute.

Things took a turn for the dangerous, however, thanks to a faulty car, an uphill road and an on-screen accident that could have had some very serious repercussions.

Chris Harris’ trusty blue Renault 4 GTI had managed to survive waterfalls and mountain passes, but it was its dodgy handbrake that managed to fail at the last minute, in the last few hours until they reached their destination.

Needing another life from Freddie and his bigger jeep, Chris left his car… but the handbrake failed. Failing to reach it in time, Chris had to watch it roll its way back down the hill – and nearly crash into P..

Failing to reach it in time, Chris had to watch it roll its way back down the hill – and nearly crash into Paddy’s Peugeot, which was just behind.

Luckily enough, eagle-eyed Paddy managed to reverse and take shelter just in time before anything serious happened – but it was a seriously sobering moment.

Unfortunately for Chris however, it meant that his car was out of action for the rest of the trip as the damage was assessed to be too great after it had crashed and flipped onto its side (yes, seriously).

In our review of the new special, we called it an un-festive, yet hilarious, thrill ride that was part Indiana Jones, part Carry On Up The Khyber.

As well as the new special, however, fans are also getting treated to a full series of hijinks in the New Year.

The first trailer for the next run of episodes has just been released – and features the stomach-churning sight of Freddie Flintoff bungee jumping inside a car.

Yes, you read that right.

The new minute-long clip is set to The Sugar Hill Gang’s Apache and shows the threesome travel far and wide, including Peru and Switzerland.

Clearly out of their comfort zones, the trailer begins with Freddie attempting to bungee-jump a bright red Rover Metro Cabriolet off a 500ft Swiss dam.

‘At this point, I wish I’d done Strictly,’ Freddie confesses as he braces himself for his vertigo-inducing activity.

The Top Gear Christmas Special is available now via BBC iPlayer. Top Gear Series 28 debuts early in 2020 on BBC Two
